Sun
Valley, ID, January 16, 2007—The nightlife at the Sun Valley, ID,
stop of The Honda Ski Tour (THST) which took place January 11-15, rivaled the
on-slope action of ski cross and skier halfpipe. The BaseCamp Music Experience
(BCME) provided non-stop entertainment as the center of Ketchum transformed
into a veritable street festival. The BaseCamp Pavilion, a 14,000-square-foot
heated pavilion, occupied a city block and accommodated 3,000 people. Meanwhile
the local bars hosted dozens of additional shows throughout the week, the doors
opening onto blocked off streets filled with performers, food vendors, and
bonfires. In addition to concerts, the pavilion hosted an array of events
including the Limelight Film Festival, the Pro Photo Shootout, fashion shows,
and freestyle snowmobile exhibition.
The BCME is presented in conjunction with THST, North
America's new elite, four-stop mountain festival and skiing competition that
features the world's best halfpipe and ski cross skiers competing for a total
of $500,000, the biggest purse in skiing. If you missed the Sun Valley stop,
there is still time to catch the 30 big-name bands that Bravo Entertainment,
the company producing the music festival, have booked to rock Breckenridge,
CO, Aspen/Snowmass, CO, and Squaw Valley, CA,
when the The Honda Ski Tour comes to town.
Crowds in the thousands came out to see Sun Valley BCME headliners
Three Days Grace and breakout rock band of the year Hinder play the sold out
tent Saturday night. Cell phones and lighters were held high as Hinder rocked
the crowd. After the show festival goers packed into the bars and theatres
where the party continued with acts like Swollen Members, Jillian Ann, DJ Aero
and Don Carlos with each show, completely sold out.
"This is amazing," said Prevail of
Swollen Members. "Being from Vancouver we're very lucky, we get to play up at
the Whistler Ski and Snowboard Festival, which is also amazing, but you can see
the foundation being built for The Honda Ski Tour to be able to amass itself to
a point where it will draw the same numbers as what's going on in Whistler and
those kinds of events. It's starting off on a great note. It's killing it."
Showcasing the year's best
extreme sports segments from the biggest producers in the game, Saturday
night's Limelight Film Festival covered the entire spectrum of action-adventure
filmmaking with segments by Teton Gravity Research, Warren Miller, Jason
Moriarty, Kent Kreitler, Jamie Mossberg, Standard Films and Lindgren
Productions. Slednecks by Jason Moriarty took top honors, as voted by viewers
via text messaging.
And what winter festival would
be complete without beautiful girls throwing swag into
an audience of thousands? The Honda Ski Tour Girls made appearances at all BCME
shows and both ski cross, where the crowd topped 4500, and halfpipe, where
attendance was nearly 3,000 strong.
