Squaw Valley USA, CA,
March 12, 2007—Renowned hip-hop-blues-acoustic artist G. Love & Special
Sauce, reggae ambassadors The Wailers, acoustic/folk artist Donavon
Frankenreiter, and the originator of Funkadelic-Parliament George Clinton all
performed in Squaw Valley USA, CA, for the BaseCamp Music Experience of The
Honda Ski Tour from March 10-11, 2007. The BCME is part of The Honda Ski Tour
(THST), and Squaw Valley USA acted as the fourth and final stop on the
inaugural four-stop tour.
"We started and ended with a bang," said THST co-founder
Steve Brown. "We accomplished what we set out to do by creating buzz and an
impact on skiing. The final week here in Squaw Valley was great with the
weather and spectacular competition. We are definitely coming back next year,
bigger and better."
THST is North
America's new elite, four-stop mountain festival and skiing competition that
features the world's best halfpipe and ski cross skiers competing for a total
of $500,000, the biggest purse in skiing.
Donavon Frankenreiter, a former professional surfer from
California, kicked off the BaseCamp Music Experience on Friday night in front
of a sold-out crowd inside the 2,700-person BaseCamp Pavilion. Frankenreiter
combined acoustic, folk-style jams with a southern rock sound that especially
excited the crowd when he hopped down from the BaseCamp stage and sang while
meandering through the mob of Frankenreiter fans.
"On certain nights when I'm kinda feeling it, I like to be a
part of the crowd and sing with them," Frankenreiter said following his
two-hour show. "It was a great time up here in the mountains. We had a lot of
fun. I'd love to come back and play at another Honda Ski Tour."
Once Frankenreiter finished his show, Matt Costa played his
catchy acoustic beats at the Crocs Lounge—Bar One while the Idaho hip-hop group
of Kamphire Collective played with live instrumentation at the Plaza Bar. The
three late shows featured former pro skiers Matt Reardon, a popular musician in
the European Alps, and Shane Anderson playing separate classic/heavy-metal
rocks shows at the OVL venue, DJ Logic spinning his amazing beats at the Zenbu
Lounge, and MC Wisdom laying down his versatile hip-hop tunes.
On Saturday night, worldwide reggae ambassadors The Wailers
played their third THST show commencing another night of music inside a
sold-out BaseCamp Pavilion. Philadelphia native G. Love & Special Sauce
made their THST debut after The Wailers. "It was tough to come on stage after
The Wailers, a band I've looked up to as a kid," said G. backstage after the
show. "But we played well and had a good time." The band performed their
easy-listening hip-hop blues that thrilled an energized crowd eager for the
Special Sauce beats.
The originators of Funkadelic-Parliament, George Clinton and
the P-Funk All Stars played at the OVL venue into the early Sunday morning
hours with the crowd matching the unique spirit of the band by wearing funky
hats and costumes making for a fun evening. Internet music celebrity Jillian
Ann performed at the Zenbu Lounge singing over DJ-style-electronica beats while
Elan, the former front man for The Wailers, and his entire band played inspired
reggae-folk music at Crocs Lounge—Bar One. Tyrone Wells, the son of a preacher,
performed at the Plaza Bar playing a combination of soul, pop, and rock.
The BaseCamp Music Experience added to the on-hill action
with numerous renowned musical acts making The Honda Ski Tour the premier
mountain festival tour in the world. The Honda Ski Tour and the BaseCamp Music
Experience returns next year with another set list of legendary musical artists
playing inspiring tunes surrounded by mountains.
